THE DIFFERENCE OF COLLEGE AND HIGH SCHOOL
College and high school is
different, is it true?
There are many questions
which asking about the differences between high school and college classes. For
example, why do the schedule of college changing every day? Why do collegian
impressed individually? How can every collegian has a different time of
graduation? Sometimes high school students feel confused with college
situation. They think that college has “horrible” situation, not like their
condition in high school. Generally, there are many differences between high
school and college classes, some of them are the curriculum system, the
function of lecturer, and the student roles.
Curriculum system has an
important role in high school and college education. High school usually use
same curriculum set by government. But, in college the curriculum depend on
university decision. College curriculum is divided into free curriculum,
package curriculum, and block system. For some faculty/departments, there is a
pre-requisite (some subject that collegian have to take as a requirement to
another course). College curriculum is more flexible than high school have, it
is adjusted with the condition of each collegian and lecturer.
Then, the difference is
looked from the teacher function. Usually, high school students call their
teacher as “teacher” and collegian call their teacher as “lecturer”. Teacher
and lecturer have a similar duty which is to explain, to guide, and to evaluate
their students about the subject. On the other hand, they have difference,
teachers have to deliver the lesson as well as possible and make their student understand
the concept. Teacher also have to be a
role model for their students while in college class, collegian are positioned
as someone who needs knowledge because Lecture assumes their students have been
matured. Sometimes, lecturer doesn’t
care whether their collegians understand the subject or not. Moreover, it is
essential for collegian to know the character of each lecturer.
Students and collegian
also have a different role in class. In
college class, collegians are assumed as an responsible and independent person
while in high school, students still considered as teenager. Learning system also has a different
direction. Collegian must find their needs of knowledge to lecturer so their
understanding of subject is depended on themselves, but in high school teachers
come to their students. In addition,
there are no tolerant among assignment, for example, when lecture X gives a task for next week and
lecture Y does too, collegian have to do it all as well as possible and on
time. There is no doubt that collegians usually have an overlapping assignment
and they should have an ability to manage time well.
Over all, it clearly shows
that college and high school class have a different condition like high school
has a exact curriculum while college curriculum is flexible. The function of
teacher and student’s roles is also different in which high school learning
direction comes from teacher to students while in college is otherwise.
